Only in Hollywood can a bond build
between a pot-smoking, sex-addicted
record producer, a rock-star boyfriend 20
years her junior, a straight-laced Harvard
Medical School graduate and his rich
fiancée who is obsessed with the mating
rituals of fruit flies. Writer/Director Lisa
Cholodenko creates this tabloid type of
family that seems too quirky to be real
and too far-fetched to be relatable as it
meanders from extreme character to
improbable relationship until it reaches a
disappointing inconclusive ending. The
all-star cast led by the riveting
character-actress Frances McDormand
manages to save this film from its
destined burial in the self-titled California
chasm.
