Through the lush frame of Y La Bamba, singer/songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza weaves together tales narrating the experience of a Mexican-American woman in modern America. The contemporary sounds sift in via moody production and indie folk elements, but the roots are there as well: Mendoza's singing style, the Latin-tinged melodies, the spirituality. Sometimes her tales are faint and heartbreaking, some are melodic and groovy, but all of them are noteworthy.

See Y La Bamba at 191 Toole. 191 E. Toole Ave. 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19. $12-$15. 21+.

Roberto Carlos

"Detalles"

This song is a song I grew up listening to, one of my favorites of all time. I just love his voice and his intention.

Bokelo Isenge

"Tambola Na Mokili"

I love listening to these rhythms and this is part of my rotation. Love music from the congo. He was born in the 1930s in the Congo Belge outside of Leopoldville.

La Lupe

"El Cabronero"

OMG, she's the queen. One of my inspirations. My friend Vaughn Kimmons introduced me to her. I love all of her energy and def relate with her spirit.

Lola Beltran

"La noche de mi mal"

Just a pure gem of honest emotion. I grew up listening to mariachi and it was just another way of breathing and feeling. I love her.

Rigo Tovar

"Amor Sincero"

Rigo Tovar is one of my favorite artists, his style of cumbia has serenaded me throughout my life, at my quinceñera, bodas I would go to, all family gatherings. It's my portal away from everything.
