If you like indie films but feel studios like Fox Searchlight and Focus have sponged up all that’s great about them, here’s one you may want to check out. Kid-Thing is certainly not studio fare, and it’s certainly out there. While going through the woods one day, saddo preteen Annie (Sydney Aguirre) finds Esther (Susan Tyrell) at the bottom of a pit. Now what? Does she help the stranger or let her die. (A little bit about Annie: She’s more the let-her-die type.) The guys who made this film are David and Nathan Zellner, and it’s probably not a stretch to call them experimental filmmakers. Some of that works great in Kid-Thing, other times not so much. But where it’s on solid ground is showing a child growing up by the decisions she makes or doesn’t make. It just takes the scenic route to get there.
