Drama, Romance
The point of this high-falutin’ romantic drama, which is seasoned with implausible fantasy scenes, is to point out that, contrary to the popular tune, a kiss is never just a kiss. Unfortunately, filmgoers constantly are besieged with movies that are just a movie despite aspiring to be more, such as this one. Actor Fisher Stevens directs a script adapted by screenwriter and co-star Patrick Breen from his own play. Marisa Tomei, Ron Eldard, Kyra Sedgwick, Zoe Caldwell, Marley Shelton, Sarita Choudhury and the ubiquitous Taye Diggs appear as serial monogamists who have fidelity issues and are, oddly, given the opportunity to go back in time and correct their wrongs. That Just a Kiss employs the same gimmick—a software program that transforms live-action characters into animation—Richard Linklater used for the far superior Waking Life only emphasizes this film’s weakness.
