Re: “Borderlands Theater

While I love the theater, I am not an expert in drama criticism. However, I found my experience of SHE WAS MY BROTHER somewhat different from that of the reviewer. This powerful play stayed with me for days and days, and I kept revisiting the issues so compellingly presented on stage. I celebrate Barclay Goldsmith and Borderlands Theater for groundbreaking work in taking on gender this season, and in SHE WAS MY BROTHER addressing the intricate mix of transgender, bisexuality, same sex love, race, and ethnicity. Any one of these issues has its own complexities, but when they are all addressed at once, the result is amazing. This play not only gripped me in its fine acting and set, but also has stayed with me long since that evening. For days afterward, it has nudged me to think and feel more deeply about the complicated and significant issues of sexual fluidity and culture. That combination of powerful performance and lasting impact adds up to remarkable theater in my experience. -- James B. Nelson
