Re: “Guest Opinion: VOICES

I want to thank you for this entry in the “VOICE writers discuss and reinforce dominant ideologies of our culture” series – or, if I may suggest a more appropriate title, Kaitlin Gates Tarter’s “Everything that is wrong about animal agriculture can be addressed by a mouthful of delicious cheese.” As long as we have omnivores writing, we’ll have people earnestly attempting to convince us that eating soft serve in front of the television is a moral good equivalent to rejecting what is done in slaughterhouses, battery farms, and dairies across the country as a direct result of our dietary decisions. I can’t get enough of it! My only tiny request is that next time maybe you solicit a piece from a writer who understands veganism enough to know that gluten is not avoided by vegans (clue number one: it comes from wheat). Maybe once we see more brave and innovative pieces reinforcing cultural norms (I guess the young today aren’t as rebellious as they used to be, huh?), we can have a follow-up from Tarter explaining what exactly it means to be “more conscious” if you’re making exactly the same decisions as you made before.
