Independence Day

Next Tuesday, we'll all celebrate Independence Day. And I am pissed.

We live in a time when a whole bunch of people--liberals, those in the media who expose illegal government activities, and those who dare to criticize our elected officials--are called traitors, or unpatriotic, or even terrorist sympathizers.

What a load of crap.

I am one of the aforementioned people who's being called these kinds of names--and I love my country. I really do. And it pains me to see my elected officials lying to me. It angers me to see some of them violate the Constitution in the name of "homeland security." It saddens me to see LGBT people (such as myself) politicized and discriminated against in the name of "morals" and "family values."

But the thing that literally drives me to tears--tears of frustration and extreme sadness--is that because we criticize these most un-American of activities, we're called names, and accused of not loving our country.

Explain to me, please, how that makes one damn bit of sense.

· And on a different note ... due to a production error, we have a goof in our TAMMIES supplement, which was printed before the rest of this issue.

On Page 4, the last lines of the Best Single Live Performance (Critics' Choice) write-up were omitted. That last paragraph, which discussed runners-up The Jons (covering Tom Jones at The Great Cover-Up, Hotel Congress), should read:

From the wigs and polyester attire to the panties being thrown on stage to the music itself, The Jons' take on Tom Jones was nothin' but a good, good time.

We apologize for the mistake.
