In a World ...

The directorial debut film from Childrens Hospital’s star Lake Bell is a sharp and funny look at the voice-over industry in Hollywood. Bell wrote, directed, and starred in this picture about Carol Soloman, a young voice-over actress struggling to have her voice heard amongst the men who dominate the field. Key among them is her own father, “king of voice-overs” Sam Soto (deliciously played by Fred Melamed), and his protege Gustav Warner (the always lunkheaded Ken Marino), who takes a sleazy interest in Solomon. All three of them are competing against each other to provide the voice for the Amazon Games trailer, a film franchise set to rake in some big bucks. Solomon finds herself butting heads with the old boy network, but she’s not about to bow out and keep quiet. In a World... never lets it’s quirkiness get out of hand, and Bell is not afraid to pull some punches. Paul Bartel would be proud.
