Hustle & Flow
This is a good bad movie, and not in the sense of being so bad it’s good, but rather in being completely unoriginal while nonetheless pulling off a perfect take on an overdone form. Writer/director Craig Brewer takes the Hollywood formula of triumph over adversity, sets it in Memphis and makes a pimp-cum-rapper his hero. It’s hard to pull off, but Hustle and Flow makes it work with gritty, story-intensive cinematography and a great lead performance by Terrence Dashon Howard.
