Hip Hop Helps

"The Elements" is an event centered on enjoying the culture of hip hop while also helping out youth in need (for more on the show, go to our music section). Hip hop is a creative outlet and source of refuge for many youth today facing modern struggles. On Saturday, Feb. 28 from 7 to 11 p.m., the event, located at 191 E. Toole Ave., will explore DJing, MCing, B-boying, graffiti writing, and knowledge as central components of the culture. There will be a rap battle, DJs, live art, dance crew performances and vendor booths to enhance the authentic experience. Proceeds will go to local nonprofit organization Youth On Their Own, which supports high school graduation by preventing dropouts among homeless, unaccompanied youth in Tucson. Admission is $5. In addition, a monetary or in-kind donation is required. The in-kind list is non-perishable food items, new, regular size personal care products, and new undergarments (sized to fit 13 to 21 year olds). More info can be found at the event's Facebook page.
