How long will the major studios keep making movies like Battleship, with bloated budgets and obscene marketing pushes, when people are flocking to smaller films? Chronicle, which is quite good, cost $12 million, and only Hugo cost more than the Hollywood average among Best Picture hopefuls. Hello Lonesome is not sci-fi or action, but it did cost about $50,000 to make. It didn’t need to cost more, and has been winning consistent praise at film festivals for all the right reasons. Writer-director Adam Reid brings an Altman-esque view of the world to three separate, engaging stories. And like Robert Altman, Reid finds points of intersection and shows a steady hand at storytelling. It’s funny but not hilarious, warm without being overcooked, and insightful without struggling to be.
