Comedy, Horror
Although we don’t need more horror movie spoofs thanks to the well that’s been drained by the Wayans brothers, Hell Baby is genuinely funny in spots. This baby has been spawned by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, the guys behind Reno 911, and it’s the most deadpan comedy in a long time, which is perfect for this kind of send-up. Jack and Vanessa (Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb) have moved into a fixer-upper in New Orleans during Vanessa’s pregnancy. Weird things start happening and away we go. There are obviously no surprises in horror spoofs these days, but Hell Baby is still a good time. It’s raunchy, has some great nonsense, and the cast—including the directors, Michael Ian Black, Keegan Michael Key and Riki Lindhome of the acoustic comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates—make it worth watching for more than just Reno 911 fans.

Indy Week Hell Baby, a comedy about satanic offspring While not a lot of Hell Baby works, it does seem destined to be an acquired-taste howler for people who recognize how ridiculous horror movies can be—and, of course, stoners. by Craig D. Lindsey 09/04/2013
