Going the Distance centers on Erin (Drew Barrymore) and Garrett (Justin Long), who meet, fall in love and decide to be together, despite the fact that she lives in San Francisco and he in New York. The movie really isn’t bad—it has several good, laugh-out-loud gags—but it just seems … flat. The main problem is that the leads have very little chemistry (a surprising fact considering that Barrymore and Long have been in a real-life relationship). This may be due to portions of the script being poorly written, with a lot of dialogue sounding awkward, stilted and needlessly crass. The main problem with the film is Garrett’s roommate, Dan (Charlie Day); while he is supposed to be lovable and zany, he comes off as gratuitous and disgusting.
