Over at the University of Wisconsin, professor of psychology and psychiatry Richard Davidson is taking a page out of the Dalai Lama’s book and using “compassion meditation” to treat war veterans afflicted with PTSD as well as children with development issues. This documentary follows Davidson as he applies this to a group of vets struggling with day-to-day life, and to a little boy with ADHD and an unhealthy fear of elevators. What follows is a mediocre documentary that’s more suited for a yoga class than for a movie theater. There’s little narration, the animated bits are clumsy, and the doc predictably starts sliding into New Age hokum territory before the end credits roll. There’s not a lot of hard science to back up Davidson’s claims, but if a few people can get better using simple breathing techniques instead of popping pills, so be it.
