Four Brothers

Director John Singleton delivers a goofy revenge flick that gets by on its star power and great action scenes. Mark Wahlberg is excellent as Bobby Mercer, a lowlife whose mother has been killed in an apparent convenience store robbery. He and his brothers make a pact to find their mother’s killer, which paves the way for plenty of bloodshed. As revenge flicks go, this is a good one, with a Detroit setting that suggests the law doesn’t have much say in stopping four guys looking for blood in the name of mom. These guys get to shoot anybody they want, crash cars all over town, and harass crime lords without anybody stopping them. Sure, it’s nonsense, but it’s entertaining nonsense. Wahlberg gets nice assistance from the likes of Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin and Garrett Hedlund as his siblings. A nice comeback for Singleton, who wasted his time with the recent 2 Fast 2 Furious.
