Drama
The predictable plot and humdrum dialogue can’t keep up with the quick, pulsating rhythms of this film, co-produced by Jennifer Lopez and first-timers from Sony BMG. Omarion Grandberry plays a Harlem rapper transitioning from his hip-hop boy band who flees to his deadbeat dad in Puerto Rico after gang-bangers seek his death. The escapee meets his half-brother, who introduces him to the rap, hip-hop, reggae and salsa conglomeration known as reggaeton. Together, the two jump on the path toward music stardom with cinematic convenience and ease. Weighing in with a PG-13 rating thanks to the watered-down violence and dancing that’s far from dirty, director Alejandro Chomski’s one-note contrivance never finds the beat.
