This Chinese film about movie-loving Maoists and their misadventures has a nice plot thats crippled by poor form. The film begins with deliveryman Mao Dabing effusing about his love of cinema. Sadly, hes so distracted by his movie-mania that he doesnt see the pile of bricks in the road, and he crashes his bike. For some reason, this causes a mysterious young woman to bash him on the head. Later, she asks him to feed her goldfish. Up to this point, the movie is totally engaging, but the next hour is mostly a flashback with a lot of voiceover narration, which is really not the best formula for exciting cinema. As this tale works itself out, lots of little mysteries are introduced and resolved, but the mode of presentation makes it hard to stay interested.
