Get Out Your Calendar

Some information worth knowing:

• In next week's issue, we'll announce this year's Tucson Area Music Awards (TAMMIES) finalists, and kick off the final round of voting.

To recap: In April and May, we held our first round of readers' choice voting. At the same time, music editor Stephen Seigel polled local music critics, promoters and other folks in the know. The TAMMIES finalists we'll be announcing next week received the most votes from either the readers or the critics/promoters (and, in some cases, both).

Mark your calendars: The TAMMIES winners will be announced at our annual concert and awards show, which is slated for Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Rialto Theatre. It's a cliché, but it's true: You won't want to miss it.

• On Aug. 18, we'll be publishing our Fall Arts Preview.

If you would like your fall arts event or exhibit to be included, please e-mail the information to both our listings department (listings@tucsonweekly.com) and our arts editor, Margaret Regan (mregan@tucsonweekly.com). The sooner you e-mail us, the better. Thanks!

• One more thing to mark on your calendars (if you have not done so already): Best of Tucson® 25 will come out on Sept. 22.

Several people have asked me why we do Best of Tucson® voting in April and May, and then wait to publish the issue in September. Well, it takes a while to tabulate all of the results, plug in all of the appropriate information for each winner and runner-up (address, phone, website, etc.), take photos and write 200-plus blurbs for the issue. So we take the summer to do all of that, and then show off the glorious results in September, when all of the people who fled Tucson during the summer are back.

Got any other questions? Email me.

  • Happy Birthday, Hotel Congress

You don’t turn 100 every day, so a big congrats to Hotel Congress for hitting the century mark. Home to landmarks like Club Congress and the Cup Café, Congress has become a cultural centerpiece in Tucson. You never know who you’re likely to see when you pop in for breakfast: Is that a U.S. senator? An indie rock star? A renowned artist?

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since reporter and author Charles Bowden died at age 69. But even though Chuck—famous for his investigations into the drug trade along the border as well as his environmental writing—is no longer with us, his words are.
