Goodbye, Sen. McCain

Like everyone else in Arizona politics, I have a John McCain story you can read about in this week's Skinny column. McCain, who died Saturday, Aug. 25, after battling brain cancer for year, was a political legend in Arizona. I rarely agreed with him, but I did appreciate his willingness to stick his neck out and defy his party from time to time to work across the aisle, as Ron Barber, the former Southern Arizona congressman, talks about in our pages this week.

Elsewhere in the paper: Do we ever have a lot going on in this town over the next few months! Our Fall Arts Preview is here, with longtime arts writer Margaret Regan telling us what's happening in museums, galleries and dance stages; theater critic Sherilyn Forrester previewing what's happening across the boards; and calendar editor Emily Dieckman looking ahead at various music performances. There's really something for everyone who wants a little culture in their lives.

Speaking of getting out and having some fun: We highlighted this weekend's HOCO Fest at Hotel Congress in last week's issue, but this week's Nightcrawler column covers some of the best acts you'll see.

We've also got columnist Tom Danehy weighing in President Donald Trump's latest legal woes; Chow writer Mark Whittaker knocking back shots at downtown's Series 19, a bar that specializes in spirits distilled right here in Arizona; staff writer Christopher Boan paying homage to the Marcus King Band; movie Bob Grimm warning us that there's no reason to see The Happytime Murders; Margaret Regan previewing a talk on 1968 by local author Tom Miller; and all the usual guides to fun in Tucson this week. It's a big, fat paper you hold in your hands, so start planning your fall calendar today!
