I'm delighted to announce this week that staff reporter Danyelle Khmara has been promoted to associate editor here at Tucson Weekly and Tucson Local Media. Besides her outstanding reporting over the last year—Danyelle brought home three awards in this year's Arizona Press Club competition—she's been working hard behind the scenes by organizing our internship program, lending a hand with production and a whole bunch of other work that make it possible to get our papers out the door. Congrats, Khmara! Now get back to work.
This week, Danyelle brings us two stories about Congressional District 2. One focuses on the warm reception that two of the underdogs in the Democratic primary received at a forum last week, while another looks at how the two frontrunners, Ann Kirkpatrick and Matt Heinz, are hammering away at each other. Rounding out the news section is a story by two of our UA interns, Maria Angulo and Kathleen B. Kunz, who look into the fascinating candidacy of Bobby Wilson, a Republican seeking a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives. It takes a lot for a candidate for the Arizona Legislature to even get local media attention, much less national attention, but killing your mom in self-defense is certainly going to do the trick.
Elsewhere in the paper: Tucson Salvage columnist Brian Smith brings us a summer love story; feature writer Jeff Gardner catches up with Beach House ahead of next week's show at the Rialto Theatre; arts writer Margaret Regan reviews a show of printmaking by women at the University Museum of Art; Chow writer Mark Whittaker teaches us all about doing the Hoki Poki; movie critic Bob Grimm does the math on The Equalizer 2; and, of course, we have all the usual guides to fun and games in Tucson this week.
We're also nearing the end of balloting in our Best of Tucson™ competition, so if you haven't voted yet, you're running out of time. You have to vote online at tucsonweekly.com before 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5.
Speaking of deadlines: In the other important campaign season underway, you're running out of time to register to vote. The deadline to register to vote in this year's primary election is Monday, July 30.
