Dust Devil

Summer Day, 1965

I helped make sandwiches – white bread, smeared with margarine and sprinkled with sugar.  We trooped out of the house, a mother duckling and her five scruffy fluffs. At the dry riverbed, we found a cardboard box, and took turns sledding down the sandy banks, then sat riverside under the shade of a not-so-lush mesquite picnicking on sweet sandwiches and a jug of water - sandy, hot and happy.
