A cocky street drummer from Harlem with tight cornrows and a winning smile marches to the beat of his own drummer until he is recruited into a militaristic basic-training camp for marching bands that puts the term "band geek" to shame. Nick Cannon fills the screen with his innate charm as the talented kid with an attitude whose rim shots and rapid rhythms lead his fellow musicians to the coveted BET Classic competition, while his back talk and belligerence lead him off the field to watch from the sidelines. Orlando Jones co-stars as the General Lee of band conductors with Zoe Saldana as Cannon’s sweet and sexy girlfriend. The real star of the show is the energized heart-pumping beats set to eye-opening choreography. This makes the highly formulaic plot more forgiving and gives the UA’s Dancing Tubas some steep competition.
