After saving a damsel in distress, four friends gain telepathic super powers that they later use to save the world from red spongy fungus, slimy eels with 600 teeth and a 10-foot-tall mute alien leader in this utterly ridiculous and incoherent waste loosely based on Stephen King’s best-selling novel. Writer/Director Lawrence Kasdan brings this book to the big screen with initial promise as the group of guys befriends a boy who has intriguing and mysterious supernatural abilities. When vicious mucous monsters invade Maine’s snow-covered hills to contaminate the drinking water and a military man on an alien-annihilating power trip (played by a bushy-browed Morgan Freeman) initiates an untimely gory and graphic air raid, Kasdan’s dream of catching cinematic success is far from his reach.
