Re: “Guest Opinion

Unfortunately, Jessica Wing is not the only young woman to be diagnosed with unusually early onset of a lethal cancer following egg donation. As a university professor and medical sociologist I have come across many tragic outcomes of egg harvesting. Given that the trade in human eggs is extremely lucrative it should come as no surprise that neither the industry itself nor any government regulatory agency has bothered to follow egg donors to discover the long-term consequences of hormonal manipulation to force young bodies to produce many times the normal number of eggs in a cycle. It took us decades to learn how deadly the early hormonal treatment of pregnant women was with diethylstilbestrol (DES), and it took decades for us to document increased rates of cancer, heart disease and other negative health consequences of hormone replacement therapy. No wonder it is said that the only thing we learn from history is that we don’t learn from history. One of these days we will be successful in establishing a registry to follow egg donors as Dr. Schneider recommends. I wonder how many lives will be destroyed before we are able to provide the data necessary for meaningful informed consent.
