Rated NR

Director Wim Wenders creates a pretty good movie with one of his more meaningful films in some time. Sam Shepard (who wrote the screenplay) stars as a washed-up cowboy movie actor who walks off a set and goes on a search for his family. Along the way, he sees his mom (Eva Marie Saint), an old flame (Jessica Lange, a frequent Shepard co-star in the ’80s) and the children he never met. The film loses focus at times, but that’s Wenders for you, and if you like the vibe of his previous films, you might like this one. It’s beautiful to look at (Wenders does some majestic American landscapes justice), and there are some nice performances, especially from Shepard and Lange. Tim Roth and the always-great Sarah Polley show up in supporting roles, and even George Kennedy makes an appearance as a movie director. Not an ordinary film by any means, and that’s a plus.
