Dogtown and Z-Boys
An interesting story about the birth of modern skateboard culture gets bogged-down by an excessively arty style in this documentary. Tracing the rise and fall of the Zephyr skate-board team from their early days as surfers, through their brief brush with fame in the 1970s, and on to their requisite VH-1 burnout, Dogtown actually does a great job of exposing a hidden history of the poor kids who invented extreme. On the other hand, all of its camera tricks and post-production effects fail to hide a lack of structure, and the film seems to lose direction, meander, and become a bit boring at times. Still, an interesting document that’s worth looking at if only for the background it gives to such things as the X-Games, extreme sports and recent cereal commercials.
