Like rec league softball, Despicable Me 2 is still an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours without exerting yourself too much. The ace in the hole is Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), the bumbling supervillain who has retired from evildoing to care for a trio of orphaned sisters. But he’s called into action again, this time on the right side of the law, to identify and stop a dangerous bad guy who can wreak untold havoc and destruction on the world. A kid-friendly havoc and destruction, of course, since this is rated PG. Gru finds love this time around (Kristen Wiig) and Carell turns in another solid outing as one of the true fun characters of family entertainment. The movie itself is a little dry and flaky at times, but not enough to derail things. Still, it would be great to see Gru have more to work with.
