delete me

Truly inventive filmmaking from Todd Haynes. Using the life of Bob Dylan as inspiration, Haynes creates six (or maybe seven) avatars of Dylan’s various incarnations to inhabit a psychedelic world of enlightened hoboes and fuzzy-haired preachers who transform into movie-megastars and lanky artists with multiple sexualities. The ’60s bleed out into the ’70s, and then the 1870s, when Billy the Kid meets a young Woody Guthrie and tries to save a town of Halloween revelers from an English journalist who just wants, against all reason, to make sense of things. Don’t succumb to the temptation. I’m Not There, though occasionally dull and 20 minutes too long, is a work of self-indulgent genius that deserves and rewards viewing, even if it asks a little too much.
