Day Watch
This sequel to the Russian vampire movie Night Watch is equally convoluted, stupid and beautiful. The story revolves around a millennia-long war between immortals who wear track suits and gold chains, and other immortals who wear overcoats and suffer from depression. Suddenly, a child is born who is half track suit, half depressed, and the eternal balance is broken. Then a man turns into a woman so he can have lesbian sex; someone drives a car on the side of a building; and a magical yo-yo threatens to destroy Moscow. The acting has the staged and stereotypical feel of a silent movie, and the story is both ridiculously complex and morally simplistic, but the visuals make up for part of that. Still, if the film weren’t so loud, you’d run a real risk of falling asleep during the dreaded middle third.
