Inspirational Christian messages get lost in this contrived, overextended commercial for Neale Donald Walsch’s best-selling book. Adapted from his acclaimed novel, this film re-enacts Walsch’s pre-ordained journey from being a digging-in-trash homeless man to a spiritual leader and notable author, all because of his profound 4:31 a.m. talks with The Almighty One. This uplifting and inspiring sentiment is tainted by hokey Hollywood tricks, like music that swells on cue, an ethereal voice that flirts dangerously with unintentional humor and a story that stalls with every unnecessary panoramic view and montage. Director Stephen Simon could have used his own early morning chat with The Man Upstairs to lift this film from its current sorry state.
