Control
This is a nicely photographed and impeccably acted biopic about Ian Curtis, the former leader singer of Joy Division and a current deceased person. It’s a must-see for hard-core Joy Division fans, but perhaps a little slow for others. Stretched to a little more than two hours, it focuses mostly on the mundane, working-class life that Curtis somehow continued to lead even when he was an international rock star. While changing diapers and making tea are all well and good, after about 90 minutes, I was looking forward to the scene in which he finds the clever way to hang up the laundry that he happens to be wearing. Sam Riley as Curtis is amazing, and Joe Anderson—who stole the show in Across the Universe—does a heavy, low-end job as Peter Hook, arguably the coolest bassist who ever lived.
