SPORTS BALL ON THE BIG SCREEN
I'm not going to pretend I know anything about football because I'd probably just look silly trying. This is a film column after all. However, if you are one of those people who want to show your Wildcat pride, you can watch UA go up against Oregon on The Screening Room's 23-foot screen with like-minded sports fans at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8. The event is free to watch, so if you're into that sort of thing, it should be pretty cool.
BAMF
Get ready to flash all the way back to 1994 when The Screening Room hosts their Flashback Film of the month. The downtown cinema will be showing the Quentin Tarantino fan favorite "Pulp Fiction" at 10 p.m. In case you haven't seen it, you really just need to know that somehow Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, and Ving Rhames all signed on to be in the movie. What results is quite possibly the oddest movie about hit men ever made, complete with that Tarantino dialogue you've come to know and love. Twist your way over to The Screening Room on Friday, Jan. 9 and see what all of the fuss is about.
EXPERIMENTAL THEATRE
Inject a little culture in your movie going routine and check out "John" at The Loft on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m., or Thursday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. The unique theatre presentation from the National Theatre began with artistic director Lloyd Newson interviewing 50 different men about love and sex. From there the story of "John" took shape-- an intense and true story of drug use, crime, and the struggle to survive. Actor Hannes Langolf takes the lead in this performance. A STUDY OF HATE
Although The Loft's look into the films of Jean Luc Godard continues this week with "Band of Outsiders" on Wednesday, Jan. 14, the art house cinema is also screening a bit of a darker side of French cinema. "La Haine" or "Hate" looks at racial prejudice in modern day France (well, 1995). Analyzing class, police violence, and crime, specifically among the country's immigrant population, the film's gritty, realistic message is as pertinent as it is poignant. You can see "La Haine" at The Loft on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. for $6.
THERE'S A GENIUS AMONG US
It's not every day you can say you got to be in the presence of a bona fide genius, but, then again, it isn't every day theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss is at The Loft. On Tuesday, Jan. 13, "The Unbelievers" will do a special screening featuring Krauss and filmmaker Gus Holwerda. The film follows Krauss and renowned evolutionary biologist and prominent atheist Richard Dawkins. With a focus on rational thought and scientific fact, the two tout their approach to thinking to arenas full of admirers, including big names like Ricky Gervais, Stephen Colbert, and Bill Maher.
