SIZING UP SABINO. A moment to vent, please.

I don't like the fact that the government charges us to visit property that belongs to us.

Places like Mount Lemmon and Sabino Canyon should be free and open to the public 24 hours a day. (Wait a minute. Free? Open? What am I thinking?)

At any rate, I've wondered on occasion what happens to the money collected at these little rip-off depots.

Well, at Sabino Canyon, improvements include new wheelchair accessible restrooms, wider walkways, two new ramadas, a stretching area with drinking fountains, bicycle parking area and vending machines.

That's right. For those who've been anxious -- construction of the Sabino Canyon Visitor "Plaza" is now complete!

I may even visit Sabino Canyon on Saturday, but only because the $5 fee will be waived for a special "Gateway" Ribbon Cutting to mark the opening of the new toilets and candy dispensers. It would be worth the trip just to see a clean public bathroom and of course to marvel at the "stretching area."

The public is invited to attend a formal ceremony and "open house" to celebrate the grand opening of the new visitor facilities, dubbed the "Gateway Project" at Sabino Canyon, to better accommodate the 1.5 million visitors that come to Sabino Canyon each year.

The event will be held in front of the visitor center and will include an appearance by Congressman Jim Kolbe, a formal ribbon cutting with project partners and an unveiling of donor tiles on decorative ceramic art friezes by Santa Theresa Tile Works in the entrance ramadas.

Following the ceremony, Coronado National Forest will host an open house in the visitor center courtyard with information on Sabino Canyon.

The event starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, Visitor Center Plaza. Take Sunrise east to Sabino Canyon Road and go north to the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area; or from Tanque Verde Road, go north onto Sabino Canyon Road to the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area. The address is 5700 N. Sabino Canyon Road. For more information, call 749-8700 or 749-1900 or visit www.sabinocanyon.org.

KEYS TO SWEET MUSIC. Pianist Robyn Wells will perform a concert of classical music Tuesday that features more than a few of the biggest names around.

A Progammatic Tour of France includes works by Debussy, Ravel, Saint-Saens, Bach and Gershwin.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 1949 E. Helen St. The event is free, but donations are accepted.
