Cheap Thrills

HAPPY TRAILS: Summit Hut celebrates National Trails Day with two big Mount Lemmon events on Saturday, June 3.

First, the Hut hosts an early morning, five-mile round-trip hike led by experienced hiking guide and former Forest Service ranger John Dell. Pre-registration is required, and a $10 donation to the Arizona Trail Association is requested.

From noon to 3 p.m., the public is also invited to a free celebration at the Inspiration Rock picnic area. Christine Jensen's Gallery of Food provides the treats, and there will also be more info about the Arizona Trail Association, trail access discussions with the Pima Trails Association, and chats about general backcountry etiquette.

For hike registration and other information, call 325-0660.

PET PARADE: Help homeless critters--and show-off your own Fluffy or Fido--when the Humane Society of Southern Arizona hosts its fourth annual Pet Fiesta.

"I have never met a pet owner who wasn't ready to pull out their photos and share the unique qualities of their precious Max, Buddy, Suzie or Cleo," says Society spokeswoman Cathy Ann Morrison. "Pet Fiesta offers the proud pet owner a chance to show off their pet's talent, and win prizes while curious onlookers enjoy the fun and excitement."

Your furry ball o' joy can compete in categories ranging from owner/pet look-alike to odd couples, kiss on command and best pet trick. It's light-hearted fun with a deadly serious point--helping the Humane Society find loving homes for the thousands of creatures it receives each year.

If you think the need isn't crucial, think again: from July 1999 to April 2000, the Southern Arizona branch received 15,059 animals. Of those, 7,870 were killed for lack of homes. In the month of April alone, the Society received 1,415 animals, and was forced to kill 742.

Step up to the fashion plate, get some kicks, and do your part at Pet Fiesta, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1, in Plaza Palomino, 2970 N. Swan Road, at the corner of Fort Lowell and Swan roads. Admission is free; contest registration is $5. For information, call 321-3704.

MARTIAN MYTHS: Visit an intergalactic fantasyland when Weird Science Theater presents the double feature Fairy Tales on the Mars Frontier and Auditioning a Ghost.

The first features future colonists of Mars in a twisted redux of familiar kids' tales. It includes everyone from the Three Little Pigs to the Pied Piper, Billy Goats Gruff and lots of troll action.

Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyles' Selecting a Ghost, the second piece focuses on a girl's whimsical wish for a ghost, which renders unexpected terror. Both plays are for children and adults, but the second has its share of scares.

Show times are 7:30 and 8 p.m. respectively, Friday and Saturday, through June 24 in the Red Barn Theater, 948 N. Main Ave. Tickets are $3.50 per play, or $5 for both. Call 622-6973 for details.
