Cheap Thrills

Guilt by association. Pick up some groceries and stay for some great tunes Sunday as The Guilty Bystanders perform for the first time at the Tucson Farmers Market.

The Bystanders are John Grant, guitarist, and Mary Ann Luini, keyboard player. Together, they sing "Americana-style country-folk music with a Southern flavor." They have played at Cuppuccino's, Bentley's, Downtown Saturday Night, the Fourth Avenue Street Fair, Borders' Books and other venues.

The Tucson Farmers Market's winter hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday. Twenty or more vendors sell organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed beef, European-style bread, tamales and other foods.

The market is in St. Philip's Plaza at East River Road and North Campbell Avenue. For more information, call 743-8063 or email: rw@bruner.net.

Living in the afterlife. Evidence to support the idea that there's life after death isn't easy to come by.

Enter Tucson's own Dr. Gary Schwartz, who just may be poised to upset science's most fundamental concepts of life. Science meets spirituality in his book, The Afterlife Experiments, the first book ever to supply detailed analytical evidence that life does indeed exist after death.

The Afterlife Experiments is the true story of the scientist's rigorous, controlled experiments in declaring his evidence of life after death.

Scoff if you want, but this guy's no quack.

A professor of psychology, medicine, neurology, psychiatry and surgery at the University of Arizona and the director of Human Energy Systems Laboratory in Tucson, Schwartz received his doctorate from Harvard University and also taught there.

He has served as a professor of psychology and psychiatry at Yale University, while also holding the position of director of the Yale Psychophysiology Center and co-director of the Yale Behavioral Medicine Clinic.

He is the author of more than 400 scientific papers and has edited 11 academic books.

If you're one of the billions of people worldwide with a vested interest in what may happen when your last day closes, learn more about The Afterlife Experiments as Schwartz speaks at 7 p.m. Monday at Barnes & Noble on Broadway.

Going def. The producer of such poetry events as Def Poets 2002 will take the stage Thursday for a free performance.

Her poetry is both dark and provocative, raw and hilarious, enhanced by the music of Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, Nine Inch Nails, Pimp Daddy Nash and others.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. Thursday at Epic Cafe, North Fourth Avenue and East University Boulevard. For more information, call 624-4120.
