Cheap Thrills

GOOD CELLO. Harvey Wolfe's been around some.

A member of the Cleveland Orchestra since 1967, the cellist has been a member of the National Symphony of Washington, the Aspen Festival Orchestra and the Houston Symphony. He's also served as principal cellist of the Phoenix and Nashville symphony orchestras.

So how much do you have to pay to hear this guy? Nada, thanks to the St. Philip's Friends of Music, who are presenting a free concert Saturday. Wolfe will be accompanied by award-winning local pianist Sean Schultze.

The program starts at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Bloom Music Center Recital Hall at St. Philip's, 4440 N. Campbell Ave. For more information, call 299-6421, ext. 29.

TAKE A DAZZLING ROAD TRIP. Hit the road and point the hood ornament in the direction of Lake Havasu.

More than 1 million lights create a dazzling display on London Bridge and English Village in the community's annual Festival of Lights, which runs through January 1.

A variety of events throughout the festival make the trip a real winner. For more information, call 800-242-8278.

FANTASY, CONTINUED. A six-time winner of the World Fantasy Award will be at Reader's Oasis on Saturday to read from her newest book.

Terri Windling's The Winter Child continues the adventures of fairies Sneezle and Twig--an adventure that began with Windling's Midsummer Night's Faery Tale.

In the latest installment, Sneezle and Twig bravely ferret out the truth behind winter's absence, find and rescue the winter child, and witness a dramatic duel of sorcerers that will determine the fate of the kingdom.

Windling has been a guiding force in the development of mythic fiction and fantasy literature for more than a decade. She divides her time between Tucson and Devon, England.

She'll sign copies of The Winter Child following the reading in an event that begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reader's Oasis, 3400 E. Speedway Blvd. #114. For more information, call 319-7887.

BY KIDS, FOR KIDS (EVEN REALLY OLD ONES). The Bianco Children's Theatre presents a musical version of the classic Christmas story Miracle on 34th Street.

The tale of a little girl who learns to believe in a real Santa Claus highlights a number of seasonal musical favorites for the whole family.

Performances at 11 a.m. December 15, 22 and 26-29 at the Gaslight Theatre. Tickets cost $8 adults, $7 seniors. For more information, call 886-0860.
