Cheap Thrills

SPRINGBOARD TO THE PAST: Prehistory is increasingly accessible on the Murray Springs Clovis Archaeological Site Interpretive Loop Trail, recently upgraded by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Aided by a Heritage Grant partnership with Arizona State Parks, the BLM has placed new exhibits along the trail near Sierra Vista. Those 10 displays tell the story of a 13,000-year-old settlement that was excavated by the UA between 1967 and 1971. The site also revealed remains of mammoth and bison kills near the campgrounds once inhabited by Clovis Man, and ranked among the most important archaeological sites in the country.

To reach the trail, travel east from Sierra Vista on Highway 90 to Moson Road, and turn north for 1.1 miles to the entrance gate. The trail is open during daylight hours. For details, call (520) 458-3559.

BATTER UP, BOTTOMS UP. The season is coming to an end for the Tucson Sidewinders, the Pacific Coast League AAA affiliate of those dynamic Diamondbacks. You've only got a few opportunities left to see the superstars of tomorrow, so it's time to get out to the ballpark for the final innings. It's the penultimate Thirsty Thursday of the season tonight, August 10, as the Tucson Sidewinders wrap up the latest home series against the Edmonton Trappers. From the first pitch until 9:30 p.m., cold beer and soft drinks are selling for a mere buck, with fancy imports going for $1.50 (with the exception of the featured brew of the night, Heineken, which will be available for only $1). The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Tucson Electric Park, 2500 E. Ajo Way. Tickets range from $4 to $8. The Sidewinders return to town on August 19 for an eight-game series filled with special promotions. For more information, call 434-0121.

TALE TALKERS: Tikes can get an early grip on literature with Story Time, hosted by Borders Books.

These informal gatherings meet twice a week, and include storytelling, crafts and activities. The series also offers "extra special" story times with guest authors and speakers.

Story Time meets from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday and noon to 1 p.m. Saturday in Borders, 5870 E. Broadway Blvd. For information, call 584-0111.
