Cedar Rapids

It gets a little cocky toward the end, but by and large, Cedar Rapids is an extremely funny misadventure starring Ed Helms and John C. Reilly. Why comedies that are proceeding nicely tend to go for broke in the third act remains a bit of a mystery, and that problem really plagues this film for a cozy 15 minutes. Fortunately, the movie is so strong up to that point (thanks primarily to Reilly), and Ed Helms is so good-natured throughout that even when Cedar Rapids slides downhill, it’s a forgivable lapse. This story of a mild-mannered insurance agent whose experiences at a conference don’t go according to plan gets bonus points for fleshing out the characters and sticking with them. Now if it could just find a better finish.
