Camp is Fame’s campy counterpart situated at the fictional Camp Ovation where adolescent singers, dancers and future Judy Garland parade marchers campaign for the arts with their over-the-top But I’m a Cheerleader-like performances. Among the flaming drag queens and the blatantly stereotypical gay teens, a heterosexual camper, played by Daniel Letterle, sticks out like a sore, manicured thumb as he uses his golden-boy charm to seduce the deluded homosexual roommate, the insecure hometown girl and others while showing off his singing skills and chiseled chest. Although the playboy playing sweet-and-innocent grows old quickly, the deliberate artificiality, wry humor, colorful cast and exuberant energy earn writer/director Todd Graff a merit badge with two snaps up and a twist.
