Bubble
Director Steven Soderbergh, cinematographer Peter Andrews and editor Mary Ann Bernard collaborate to make a film with an absolutely singular vision. Bubble is so visually captivating that it’s almost imprisoning. Using a voyeuristic style where the camera remains stationary for minutes at a time, characters speak in stilted, natural rhythms, and almost nothing occurs, Soderbergh and his crew have created a perfect American analogue to the European new wave films of the ’60s. The story revolves around the horrible event that ties together three workers at a doll manufacturing plant. Remember those Sesame Street films from the ’70s where a camera would follow a factory production line? This is like that, only with donuts and blood.
