Re: “Remember When Getting Rid Of Teacher Tenure Was a Thing?

"Take away tenure and teachers know they can be fired on a principal's whim. Forget about any sense of job security."
You mean like every other field? Nothing against teachers, but I've never understood why teachers need this special protection when no other profession has it. Nurses, engineers, and accountants, whether in or out of government, have no such special protection. Your job security comes from your competence and the demand for your skills. Government workers typically have some extra protection than private sector workers, but not tenure. Do principals have more "whims" than managers in other fields? If so, maybe we should look at that.

Re: “Requiem For a Dream: An Artist and Migrant Trail Whisperer Erects Silent Monuments to Courage

Illegal immigration to any country is not a human right. Try illegally immigrating to China, Russia, etc. See how much sympathy you get. Yes, there is a lot of sadness in the world and it is not our job to fix it all. This is why most people don't adopt homeless people and have locks on their doors.

Re: “Reps. Gallego and Kirkpatrick Talk Health Care

A few questions:
1. Since Medicare is going broke, can we expect Medicare for All to also go broke around the same time?
2. Who will be responsible for controlling costs? The U.S. government has proven absolutely awful at cost control in healthcare - further subsidization is likely to make the problem worse.
3. People with private insurance already massively subsidize Medicare, Medicaid, and those without insurance. How will that subsidy be made up when private insurers go out of business?
4. Many doctors already don't accept Medicare because reimbursement rates are too low. 5. Will doctors be arrested and forced to work if they refuse to accept Medicare for All?
6. Will all of the employees of Aetna, Blue Cross, and the other 1,000 or so private insurers be given new jobs when they lose theirs?

Re: “U.S. Rep. Tom O’Halleran: “Ending This Shutdown Must Be a Priority”

Oh my, something like sense? It's not that hard - each side gets something they want. You're going to have to build some wall/fence because that's what Trump wants and he represents 48 million votes or so. Democrats are behaving like children with no compromises offered.

Re: “A Matter of Conviction

(he) formed No More Deaths as a faith-based, humanitarian aid organization

Why does the fact that it is "faith-based" give it extra credibility? Shouldn't basing an organization on your belief in an an all-powerful, but vengeful, sky fairy give your organization less credibility?

Re: “Detention Debate

What a waste of time. Tucson is, for all intents and purposes, already a sanctuary city.

Re: “Guest Opinion: Savings Account

This is a really good idea. A similar idea is a carbon mortgage that does something like provide discounted rates when applying for a mortgage if you buy a house with certain energy efficiency features (or add them yourself).
