There is finally some good news to report regarding 3-D films. More than a year after Avatar made a massive impression on both audiences and the technical language of filmmaking, a movie has finally arrived that makes terrific use of what is otherwise a gimmick. Not surprisingly, the storytelling is also top-notch. The film is Born to Be Wild 3D, an IMAX documentary about animal sanctuaries in Kenya and Borneo that are saving countless elephants and orangutans, respectively. Narrated by Morgan Freeman and directed by veteran nature documentarian David Lickley, Born to be Wild would be a success even without the 3-D. With it—and, more specifically, with the full complement of IMAX’s state-of-the-art cameras and theatrical immersion—it’s an absolute thrill to watch.
