Best South Tucson Restaurant

Mi Nidito

Reader's Pick: There was a time, even when the Lopez family's little nest was much smaller, that you could sneak between the crowds. Maybe sometime between 2:30 and 4 in the afternoon. Maybe late at night. Those opportunities are much more rare now. Still it's not a problem, the wait. Have beer, a margarita, an iced tea with lemon. Jimmy Lopez, his dad Ernest (Chickie) and the rest of the family take care of all with grace and warmth. President Clinton feasted here, brought in by South Tucson Mayor Shirley Villegas after his speech at the music hall in February 1999. Clinton ate about everything, which is what you do at Mi Nidito. It is all good. Favorites are the topopo, the chili Colordo, the biriria, the burros, the flautas and the exquisite flat enchiladas. If you wait outside-remember no alcohol outside-you have another gift. Look at the mosaic streetscapes for South Tucson done by the students at Las Artes. The only days you won't see the crowd at Mi Nidito are Mondays and Tuesdays, when the restaurant is closed.
