Tumamoc Hill
On the west end of town next to Sentinel Peak ("A" Mountain) is a big, flat-topped hill called Tumamoc, an O'odham word meaning "horned lizard." The hill is one of the most important historic sites in the Tucson basin. Remains of Tucson's earliest Native American communities are found on Tumamoc. In 1903, the Carnegie Desert Laboratory was founded here. Out of this lab came much of our early knowledge about the Sonoran Desert, and the new science of ecology sprang from work done here. Countless UA students and researchers have studied here. Lately, the hopelessly zombified UA administration has left the hill to die of benign, if not overt, neglect, and some state trust land there could be sold at any time for condos.
