The way a city shows it cares is often with the care of its animals. That's why if you talk to some people who are accustomed to moving to different cities, perhaps cities they worry may not be politically welcoming to them, they search out the Humane Society. Yes, an odd barometer, but they discover like-minded volunteers there. In Tucson, we have a thriving Humane Society that does a great job with animals—but also the human kind, too, offering year-round youth programming and summer camp experiences. They serve as our conscience, reminding us to take care of our animal friends and each other.
