Best Place for Concerts Outside of Downtown/Fourth Avenue

Suite 147 in Plaza Palomino

Concert promoter Jonathan Holden has been bringing Americana, blues, folk, bluegrass, jazz, flamenco, Celtic and world-music shows to Tucson through his Rhythm and Roots series for about 13 years. His events have floated from venue to venue, often appearing in the courtyard at Plaza Palomino, at the corner of Swan and Fort Lowell roads. Lately, though, Rhythm and Roots has inhabited a comfy storefront space at the plaza, Suite 147, which is tastefully and minimally decorated; it's a great place to hear a concert. Highlights this year so far have included gigs by Charlie Hunter, Ellis Paul, Terri Hendrix, Jessica Fichot and Johnny Rawls. With the fall coming, the weather will allow for a few more courtyard performances, but Suite 147 is a welcome musical refuge.
