In a season of outstanding one-person shows, Roberto Guajardo's turn as an obsessed, God-haunted Dutch librarian in Under the Lintel was one of the year's most compelling theatrical experiences. Expertly directed by the insightful Jennifer Bazzell, Guajardo played a character further removed from himself than those portrayed by the season's other fine solo actors. And yet this was a thoroughly lived-in character, every detail of speech and movement and expression delivered with the natural precision of someone who was no longer acting. Guajardo seemed to have melded himself with that strange, shabby librarian, introducing us to an unforgettable personality.
