Best Mexican (No Lard)

La Salsa

1800 E. Ft. Lowell Rd.

4861 E. Grant Rd.

7090 N. Oracle Rd.

READERS' PICK: See Best Vegetarian Take-Out, page 87.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: El Saguarito, 7216 N. Oracle Road. This place even has a sign outside billing the restaurant as a place "for healthy Mexican food." While we, as Tucsonans, believe that all Mexican food is healthful, El Saguarito gives vegetarians a chance to spice up their lives, as well, without the worries of flesh fat. Well worth the drive up north to Ina and Oracle.

LOOSE CHANGE: Sanchez Burrito Company, 2350 N. First Ave.; 6875 E. Sunrise Drive; 1060 N. Craycroft Road. When some of us see the category of Best Mexican (No Lard), we think, "Wow, that stuff actually exists?" But if you look in the cracks and crevices of the Old Pueblo, you will indeed find some places that use vegetable oil in place of lard. While you're sampling the goods at Sanchez, don't forget tp try the nachos, a huge plate of chips covered with beans and melted cheese. It's a feast for one or a solid meal for four.
