Best Local Activist/Advocacy Group

Wingspan

It's 1959. Buttoned-down professor Vivian arrives in sweltering Las Vegas to get a divorce and, surprise, falls in love with the unabashed ranch lesbian. "How you get so much action without any equipment is beyoooond me." It's the best line in the sappy flick Desert Hearts. Go borrow it from Wingspan's library-just one of many features of this community organization dedicated to LGBT folks. In phases, it's grown from locals offering meeting space for youth groups back in the '70s into its present-day digs, where staff and volunteers cut a swath of advocacy: the anti-violence project, queer youth program, lesbian cancer support, gender alliance advocacy, annual film festival. Vivian could have used a Wingspan back in the '50s. Thank goodness Tucson's got one today.
