Best Home-Grown Theatrical Production

Borderlands Theater's Barrio Hollywood

Staff Pick

It's been an excellent year for Tucson theater, and any number of productions could vie for "best." But Elaine Romero's Barrio Hollywood at Borderlands Theater was the effort that showcased outstanding Tucson talent in every department, starting with the script. This tale of love and death on the Santa Cruz is Romero's strongest play to date; appealing actors including Marissa Garcia, Dana Jepson and Rosanne Couston brought both subtlety and passion to their roles; and the deceptively simple set was a typical example of John Longhofer's psychologically astute work (best seen, actually, in Borderlands' Bee-Luther-Hatchee). Bravo to all.
(Sorry, no information is currently available for other years in this same award category.)
